White Supremacist Discourse on Usenet

This paper will be presented at the Association of Internet Researchers 2027 conference in Mexico City, MX.

While early adopters were “homesteading on the electric frontier,” organized white supremacist groups were shaping how we understand civility on the internet. I’m working with newsgroup archives from the 1990’s and early-2000’s to understand to what extent white supremacist computer-mediated communication, and moral panics about it, shape how we share info, debate, and communicate online.

From Donald Trump’s GENIUS Act to Nayib Bukele’s Ley Bitcoin, it is undeniable that the global far-right sees cryptocurrency as an opportunity. Through analysis of corporate, accounting, and government policy surrounding cryptocurrency, I am taking stock of how far-right regimes and firms exploit cryptocurrency to line their coffers and avoid public scrutiny around their finances.

Gendered Aesthetics in Christian Traditionalist Networks

Is social media driving young people toward reactionary, nostalgic sects of Christianity? We’re comparing male-centered and female-centered Orthodox Christian social media networks to determine whether the “quiet revival” is speaking to young women as loudly as it is speaking to young men.
